3 Bafana Forwards Poised to Rewrite Benni McCarthy’s Goal Record

The Hunt for Benni’s Crown: Who Can Become Bafana’s All-Time Top Scorer?

Benni McCarthy’s tally of 31 goals for Bafana Bafana has remained untouched since his final match in 2012. Bernard Parker came closest with 23 goals before fading out, while Percy Tau’s pursuit has stalled at 20, and with the 31-year-old seemingly out of Hugo Broos’ plans, his chances are slipping away.

A new generation, however, is keeping the conversation alive.

Lyle Foster appears the strongest challenger. At 25, with eight international goals and Premier League exposure at Burnley, he has both time and pedigree on his side. If he stays healthy, he is the most realistic candidate to threaten McCarthy’s long-standing record.

Evidence Makgopa is another possibility. Trusted by Broos, the 6’4 striker has five goals and continues to improve. His progress hinges on developing sharper finishing, but his role as a traditional No. 9 gives him room to grow.

Oswin Appollis is the wildcard. Only 24 and already scoring for the national team, he brings creativity, energy, and versatility. With regular minutes under Broos, his ceiling is high.

Foster stands out as the most likely contender, with Appollis as the exciting outsider and Makgopa as a steady long-term option. For now, McCarthy’s record stays safe — but the next chapter in Bafana’s goalscoring history may already be unfolding.
