AmaZulu missed a golden opportunity to close in on Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership race after suffering a 2–0 defeat to Richards Bay at the Richards Bay Stadium on Friday night.
Usuthu came into the KwaZulu-Natal derby knowing that a win would temporarily lift them above Amakhosi — who are away on CAF Confederation Cup duty — but instead left empty-handed as the Natal Rich Boys produced a disciplined and clinical performance.
Meanwhile, Moses Mthembu scored the opening goal for Richards Bay in the 16th minute before the second one was scored in the 84th minute by Wandile Ngema.
The result lifts Richards Bay to 17 points in ninth place, easing their pressure in the lower half of the table. AmaZulu remain fifth on 21 points — now stuck behind a Chiefs side who still hold two games in hand.
A damaging night for Usuthu, and a major boost for the Natal Rich Boys.
