Safa Defends Broos Over ‘Mbokazi’ Remarks

The South African Football Association (Safa) has moved to quell what it describes as “growing misconceptions in the media” surrounding Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, issuing a strongly worded statement on Friday, 13 December.

Broos has come under fire for comments made during a press conference ahead of the national team’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) preparations. His criticism of Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s professionalism, as well as remarks directed at the player’s agent, sparked a wave of backlash and accusations in the public domain.

Amid the controversy, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) confirmed on Friday that it is assessing hate-speech complaints lodged against the Belgian coach. The complaints were submitted by the United Democratic Movement and members of the public.

In its statement, the SAHRC also acknowledged Safa’s past involvement in promoting human-rights awareness, noting that the association had partnered with the Commission during Human Rights Month earlier this year to advocate against racism and to promote a culture of respect.

Broos, responding through Safa, expressed disappointment at how his comments had been interpreted.

“It is unfortunate that my strong rebuke of the player’s conduct and subsequent comments were misinterpreted as racism and sexism. I distance myself from any accusation of racism and sexism,” Broos said.

Safa backed its coach, stressing that there was “no discriminatory motive behind the remarks”. The association added that during Broos’ four-year tenure, no player or staff member has ever raised concerns relating to racism, sexism or discrimination.

According to Safa, Broos’ direct and uncompromising style has been instrumental in fostering unity and strengthening the current Bafana Bafana squad.

South Africa open their Afcon campaign against Angola on Monday, 22 December, with the tournament officially getting underway the day before.
