Bafana coach Hugo Broos apologises for Mbokazi remarks, rejects racism claims
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has apologised for his comments about defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and his agent, while firmly denying accusations of racism or sexism.
The Belgian coach came under heavy criticism following his public frustration over Mbokazi’s late arrival at AFCON camp and his move from Orlando Pirates to MLS side Chicago Fire. His remarks prompted the United Democratic Movement (UDM) to lodge a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission, citing language they viewed as inappropriate.
Speaking ahead of Bafana’s friendly against Ghana, Broos admitted his wording was wrong and said he regretted how it came across. However, he stressed that he never intended to offend and rejected claims that he is racist or sexist, saying his record of working with players across Africa and South Africa speaks for itself. SAFA has also defended the coach, saying his comments were misunderstood and taken out of context.
Broos said his criticism stemmed from concern for Mbokazi’s development, arguing that the 20-year-old’s rapid rise had attracted influences that may not always have his best interests at heart. He pointed to discipline issues, including a red card and late arrival for camp, as signs that the young defender needs stronger guidance.
“I let my emotions take over because I care about his future,” Broos said. “Mbokazi is talented and humble, and it would be a waste if poor decisions derail his career. I apologise for my choice of words, but I never meant them in a racist or sexist way.”
