Update: Orlando Pirates Join Race to Sign Zim Star Washington Navaya

PIRATES: Why PSL Giants Are Watching Navaya Closely

Orlando Pirates have emerged as serious contenders in the chase for Zimbabwean striker Washington Navaya, with the Betway Premiership leaders now monitoring the forward ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Sources close to the player have confirmed that Pirates are among several clubs keeping tabs on Navaya, joining Durban City and Zimbabwean champions Scotland FC in the growing list of admirers. However, any potential move is expected to wait until after AFCON, with the 27-year-old currently locked into national team camp.

Navaya’s agent, Gilbert Sengwe, indicated that while terms can be discussed, no deal can be finalised until the tournament concludes. The Warriors coach has reportedly made it clear that players are not allowed to leave camp during preparations for Africa Cup of Nations, effectively placing all transfer talks on hold.

For Pirates, the interest fits a familiar pattern. The Buccaneers have consistently scouted Zimbabwean talent in recent seasons as part of their broader recruitment strategy, particularly attackers capable of adapting quickly to the PSL’s intensity. Navaya’s profile — mobile, clinical and experienced — appears to tick several boxes for the Soweto giants as they plan for squad depth beyond the current campaign.

Pirates Wait on AFCON Before Making Navaya Call

The striker heads into AFCON on the back of a standout season with TelOne FC, where he finished as the league’s top scorer with 17 goals and was crowned Zimbabwe Soccer Star of the Year. He will be part of the Zimbabwe national football team squad drawn alongside South Africa, Angola and Egypt — a group that could place him directly under the spotlight of PSL scouts.

Should Navaya impress in Morocco, Pirates’ interest could quickly turn into concrete negotiations, setting up a possible post-AFCON move to Mayfair if the deal is right.
