Ambitious club linked with move for seasoned South African defender Kwanda Mngonyama

Hardrock signal interest in former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates Star

Newly promoted Zimbabwean side Hardrock have explored the possibility of signing experienced former Bafana Bafana defender Kwanda Mngonyama as part of their drive to strengthen ahead of their debut season in the top flight.

Sources indicate the ambitious newcomers have made enquiries about the former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu centre-back, targeting his experience as they look to make an immediate impact after promotion.

However, Hardrock face an uphill task. Mngonyama recently secured a move to the Middle East following standout performances for South Africa at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he played a key role in the national team’s campaign.

The 32-year-old became a free agent after his AmaZulu contract expired, briefly undergoing assessment at Siwelele FC before earning his CHAN call-up. His form at the tournament attracted overseas interest, leading to a move to Bahrain’s second-tier side Al Ittihad SC.

Hardrock’s interest forms part of a broader recruitment strategy after they clinched the ZIFA Northern Region Division title, underlining their ambition to compete strongly at a higher level.

While the club is keen to invest in proven quality, landing Mngonyama appears unlikely given his recent move abroad — though their intent signals a bold approach ahead of the new season.
