Sundowns’ firepower is too much – but Pirates remain in the chase

Sundowns’ Firepower Remains the PSL’s Biggest Weapon

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender David Kannemeyer believes Mamelodi Sundowns’ depth and attacking firepower will ultimately decide the Betway Premiership title race, even though Orlando Pirates have made an impressive start to the season.

Pirates currently sit top of the table, two points ahead of Sundowns, albeit having played one game fewer. Their consistency and nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions underline a serious title push. Still, Kannemeyer is not convinced the early standings tell the full story.

According to the former left-back, Sundowns’ squad depth remains the decisive factor. While Pirates have momentum and belief, Sundowns possess layers of quality across every position – a resource that has defined their dominance over the past decade.

“Sundowns always grow into the season,” Kannemeyer explained. “They may not always start at full speed, but once the fixtures pile up, their depth allows them to rotate without losing quality. That’s where they usually pull away.”

He added that Sundowns’ attacking options are already sufficient, suggesting January reinforcements are unnecessary unless head coach Miguel Cardoso identifies a very specific need. With multiple match-winners spread across midfield and attack, the champions continue to overwhelm opponents through sustained pressure rather than reliance on one or two stars.

However, Kannemeyer stopped short of writing Pirates off completely. The Buccaneers’ hunger, tactical discipline and renewed attacking output suggest they are better equipped than in previous seasons to stay in the race. Their exit from continental competition could also allow them to focus fully on domestic ambitions.

Even so, experience remains Sundowns’ biggest weapon. As the season enters its demanding second half, history suggests their squad depth and proven winning mentality may again tilt the balance in their favour.

The title race, for now, remains finely poised – with Pirates pushing hard, but Sundowns still setting the benchmark.
