Yanga eye Kaizer Chiefs striker Khanyisa Mayo amid striker search

Tanzanian champions Young Africans monitor Chiefs forward Mayo

Kaizer Chiefs forward Khanyisa Mayo has emerged as a transfer target for Tanzanian powerhouse Young Africans SC, as interest in the striker continues to grow beyond South Africa’s borders.

Mayo, who is currently on loan at Kaizer Chiefs from Algerian outfit CR Belouizdad, is still finding his feet at Naturena. The 27-year-old has managed one goal in six appearances so far, a return that reflects a period of adjustment rather than a full return to the form that once made him one of the Premier Soccer League’s most feared finishers.

Young Africans monitor Mayo as striking options narrow

Sources close to the situation indicate that Young Africans are actively looking to reinforce their forward line after mixed returns in front of goal, despite strong domestic and continental performances. Injuries to Clement Mzize have forced the club to rely heavily on Andy Boyeli and Prince Dube, who have shared four goals between them this season.

According to information emerging from Tanzania, Mayo features on a shortlist of alternative targets. The club’s primary focus is reportedly on Angolan striker Depu, currently with Radomiak in Poland, and Gerson Dala of Al Wakrah in Qatar. Should those moves fail to materialise, Mayo is viewed as a viable and familiar option.

Notably, Young Africans’ interest in Mayo is not new. The club had previously tracked him during his time at Cape Town City before his move to Algeria, underlining long-standing admiration for his qualities.

Chiefs loan spell still under assessment

Chiefs secured Mayo’s services on loan in September after he was placed on the transfer list by CR Belouizdad. The move was designed to reignite a career that had stalled slightly in North Africa, where he featured heavily last season but delivered modest numbers relative to expectations.

While the immediate impact at Amakhosi has been limited, the club retains an option to make the deal permanent, with the loan running until June 2026. Internally, the view remains that Mayo’s experience and movement can still add value once consistency returns.

A defining phase ahead

With Chiefs sitting fourth in the league and struggling at times for cutting edge, the coming months could prove decisive for both player and club. The Africa Cup of Nations break offers Mayo a chance to reset, while Chiefs reassess their attacking balance ahead of a demanding second half of the season.

As interest from East Africa gathers pace, Mayo’s future remains open — a reminder that even during quieter spells, his reputation continues to resonate across the continent.
