Ex-Pirates star urges Mabasa to consider Kaizer Chiefs switch

Kaizer Chiefs need goals” – Why Mabasa is being pushed towards Amakhosi

Former Orlando Pirates striker Phumlani Mkhize believes Tshegofatso Mabasa should seriously consider a move to Kaizer Chiefs if his situation at Orlando Pirates does not improve.

Speaking to KickOff, Mkhize said Mabasa would be an ideal fit for Chiefs, who are still searching for a reliable goalscorer. “Kaizer Chiefs need a proper target man and a finisher like Mabasa,” Mkhize said. “He’s got goals in him, works hard, and his movement and awareness in the box are top level. Pirates’ loss would definitely be Chiefs’ gain.”

Mkhize added that while Chiefs already have Flavio Da Silva, Mabasa offers the kind of consistency and end product Amakhosi supporters expect. He also pointed out that the playing styles of Chiefs and Pirates are not vastly different, which would make the transition easier for the striker.

However, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has played down suggestions of a fallout with Mabasa. As quoted by Goal.com, Ouaddou explained that the striker’s limited game time is purely tactical.

“I don’t have any issue with Mabasa. He’s a player I like and respect,” Ouaddou said. “The choice of striker depends on the opponent, the defensive profile, and the physical demands of my game model. I have many strikers competing for one position, and I can only select 11 players.”

With competition from Evidence Makgopa, Yanele Mbuthuma and others, Mabasa’s future remains uncertain. When the season resumes, attention will be on whether Ouaddou gives him a bigger role—or whether Chiefs act on the growing calls to make a move.
