Life After Barker: Three Realistic Successors for Stellenbosch FC

The gap left behind by Steve Barker at Stellenbosch FC is immense. Filling it will require more than a steady hand — the next coach must bring tactical intelligence, leadership presence, and the energy to sustain the standards Barker established.

Beyond results, Barker reshaped the club’s identity. He implemented a clear footballing philosophy and built structures that not only elevated Stellenbosch, but also contributed positively to the wider PSL ecosystem and the national team pipeline.

Reports suggest the club has already engaged veteran coach Gavin Hunt, a potential appointment that would undoubtedly spark debate given his recent challenges in the league.

Setting Hunt aside, here are three alternative candidates who could realistically succeed Barker and continue building on his legacy.

Alexandre Lafitte

Currently the youngest head coach in the PSL, Alexandre Lafitte has made an immediate impact at Marumo Gallants. In just six months, he has demonstrated sharp tactical awareness and a clear ability to maximise player potential.

Under his guidance, Gallants reached the Carling Knockout final — their first major final since 2022. Several players, including Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, have rediscovered form and confidence, joining the club specifically to revive their careers.

Lafitte’s philosophy aligns naturally with Stellenbosch’s DNA. He favours pace, vertical transitions, and intelligent pressing — traits already embedded in the squad. Given the club’s reputation as a development-focused, selling side, Lafitte’s proven track record of nurturing talent while remaining competitive would make him a seamless fit.

Arthur Zwane

Arthur Zwane built his reputation through youth development at Kaizer Chiefs, where his work laid the groundwork for long-term value as academy graduates progressed successfully into the senior team.

That strength has resurfaced at AmaZulu FC, where youngsters such as Liam Bern, Siyanda Hlangabeza, and Nkosikhona Radebe have adapted comfortably to top-flight football under his guidance.

Zwane’s coaching goes beyond youth integration. His teams are built around structured build-up play, positional intelligence, and attacking fluidity. With Stellenbosch already blessed with speed and mobility, Zwane could enhance their transitional threat while introducing greater tactical variety.

Phuti Mohafe

Often flying under the radar, Phuti Mohafe is widely respected for his tactical discipline and consistency. At Polokwane City, he has quietly engineered stability and regular top-eight finishes.

While silverware has eluded him, Mohafe’s influence is evident in the resurgence of players like Oswin Appollis, whose career trajectory has significantly improved under his stewardship.

Mohafe favours a structured transitional game, ensuring continuity with Stellenbosch’s existing identity. Known as a firm but fair disciplinarian, he demands professionalism, consistency, and high standards — values that closely mirror those ingrained at the club.
