Downs Offer for Van Wyk turned down by SV Ried, Club Demands Siyabonga Mabena, Plus-Cash Deal
A determined push is underway as the reigning champions look to strengthen their squad ahead of a defining period. With domestic pressure mounting and continental ambitions looming large, recruitment has become a priority as plans are put in place to sharpen the attacking edge for the challenges ahead.
Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for a demanding 2026 campaign. Miguel Cardoso’s side find themselves in the unusual position of chasing Orlando Pirates in the league, while a high-stakes CAF Champions League run is firmly in focus. At Chloorkop, the message is clear: continental success is no longer optional, it is the target.
Following an inconsistent first half of the season, the club’s hierarchy believe fresh blood is required. One of the key areas identified is out wide, where pace and directness are seen as essential additions.
Opening bid for Antonio Van Wyk turned down by SV Ried
Sundowns have made an initial approach for Antonio Van Wyk, but their opening offer was rejected by SV Ried. The 23-year-old winger moved to Austria at the start of last season after a solid spell with Stellenbosch FC, where he made 78 appearances, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists.
According to reports, Ried responded with a counter-proposal that included a player-plus-cash arrangement involving Siyabonga Mabena. Sundowns, however, are unwilling to part ways with the highly rated youngster, who remains central to the club’s long-term plans.
Progress made abroad
Van Wyk has quietly built a reputation for consistency in Austria. Since arriving at Ried, he has featured in 36 matches across competitions, registering two goals and seven assists. Notably, five of those assists and one goal have come this season, highlighting his growing influence in the final third.
Sources suggest Sundowns are still weighing up whether to return with an improved cash-only offer, having already dismissed the proposed swap deal. With interest from other Austrian top-flight sides also believed to be strong, the Brazilians may need to move decisively if they are to bring the former Stellenbosch winger back home.
