Bafana Star Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole Open to Chiefs, Pirates or Sundowns Move
Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole has confirmed that a move to one of South Africa’s biggest clubs — Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns — remains a real possibility as he considers the next step in his career.
The 26-year-old is currently contracted to Portuguese side CD Tondela, having signed a new deal in December that runs until June 2027. Despite the long-term contract, Sithole has made it clear that he is open to a new challenge, particularly after spending close to nine years in Portugal.
Sithole has long been linked with a return to the Betway Premiership, most notably with Kaizer Chiefs, but a move never materialised as he continued his career in Europe following his departure from the KZN Academy in 2018.
While he remains settled at Tondela, where he has featured regularly this season, the midfielder believes the time may be right to test himself in a different environment.
“After this tournament, I would like to get a better opportunity to go and play somewhere else,” Sithole said.
“I’ve been in Portugal for a long time now, so going somewhere new, possibly outside Portugal, would be good for my career.
I have just signed a new deal, but there were discussions around it. If everything goes well, a move can happen.”
When asked directly about a potential move to one of the PSL’s traditional powerhouses — Chiefs, Pirates or Sundowns — Sithole did not hesitate, simply responding that he is open to the idea.
Currently on national duty, Sithole has played a key role in helping Bafana Bafana reach the AFCON Round of 16 and will be eager to impress once more when South Africa face Cameroon on Sunday. Strong performances at the tournament could further boost his appeal to suitors back home.
