Sundowns Winger Maseko Closing In on AEL Limassol Move
Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko is closing in on a move to Cyprus after his representatives confirmed progress on a proposed loan switch to AEL Limassol.
Maseko’s agent, Glyn Binkin, confirmed that negotiations are ongoing but nearing completion.
“Yes, it’s a work in progress,” Binkin said. “Not all the documents have been finalised and agreed, but I believe they will be.”
According to SABC Sport, Sundowns and AEL Limassol have reached a verbal agreement for the 22-year-old to join the Cypriot outfit on a six-month loan until the end of the season, with only minor details outstanding before an official announcement.
The move has been under discussion for several months, with Maseko struggling for consistent minutes under head coach Miguel Cardoso. His frustration intensified after being surprisingly omitted from Sundowns’ squad for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, despite indications that he had returned to first-team contention.
Maseko joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in a deal believed to be worth around R20 million and made an immediate impression, earning Player of the Tournament honours at the inaugural Africa Football League under former coach Rulani Mokwena. He also formed part of the Bafana Bafana squad that secured bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations two years ago.
However, limited game time since then has stalled his momentum, with the winger even turning out for the DStv Diski Challenge side this season. His camp has been pushing for a permanent exit since the start of the campaign.
While Sundowns previously rejected a firm approach from Aris Limassol, the club has now granted local rivals AEL Limassol the green light to finalise a short-term loan. The agreement is understood to be in principle, with formal confirmation expected once paperwork is completed.
