DDC: Pirates, Chiefs Win Big as Sundowns Are Held
The DStv Diski Challenge festival at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale delivered a statement weekend from Soweto’s heavyweights, as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates both opened the new year with emphatic victories—while Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to settle for a draw.
Durban City 0–4 Kaizer Chiefs
The defending champions flexed their muscles with a commanding 4–0 win. After a tight first half, Chiefs shifted gears immediately after the restart as Imaad Hendricks broke the deadlock with a close-range finish. Impact substitute Neo Bohloko then took centre stage—doubling the lead, setting up Hendricks for his second, and rounding off a polished performance with a goal of his own to seal a comprehensive victory.
AmaZulu 0–3 Orlando Pirates
Pirates tightened their grip at the summit with a convincing 3–0 triumph. Thuto Sesipi struck early, converting from close range in the 16th minute. Simphiwe Masilele followed with a superb free-kick just after the hour mark, before Joy Manana added a late third to underline the Buccaneers’ authority and extend their lead at the top.
Elsewhere on the Weekend
Mamelodi Sundowns were held 1–1 by Sekhukhune United. Bennet Mokoena netted his ninth goal of the campaign to cancel out Ofentse Moeletsi’s opener, but Sundowns couldn’t find a winner.
