Former Zimbabwe captain Benjani Mwaruwari has voiced strong support for Daniel Msendami following the winger’s move to Orlando Pirates, insisting the timing of the transfer could not be better.
Msendami completed a permanent switch to the Soweto giants this week from Marumo Gallants, stepping into one of the most competitive attacking departments in the Betway Premiership. His arrival has sparked debate back home in Zimbabwe, with questions raised over potential game time given the presence of established Bafana Bafana internationals such as Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi and Relebohile Mofokeng.
Speaking from the United Kingdom, Mwaruwari believes the move represents a natural progression in Msendami’s career.
“For me, Daniel has made a very good move. In football, a player should never hesitate to take a big step,” Mwaruwari told FARPost. “He has been in South Africa for over a season now, so he understands what the league demands. This move has come at the right time for him.”
The former Manchester City and Jomo Cosmos striker stressed that immediate impact will be key if Msendami is to establish himself at Pirates.
“He must hit the ground running. Pirates are a big club and with that comes pressure, but he should not allow that to overwhelm him. His focus must be on assisting, scoring goals, creating chances and impressing the technical team.”
Benjani’s advice to Msendami
Mwaruwari also offered practical advice on how the Zimbabwe international can maximise his opportunity at the Buccaneers.
“He must keep his head down, respect his teammates and understand that no one is guaranteed a place, even if the coach knows you. Hard work is non-negotiable,” he said.
“And he must stay away from distractions off the field — Jozi is always Jozi,” Mwaruwari added with a chuckle.
