Kaizer Chiefs aim to seize control of CAF Confederation Cup destiny

Kaizer Chiefs head into their CAF Confederation Cup clash with renewed belief, knowing victory would firmly place their qualification fate in their own hands. After a difficult start to Group D—losing to Al Masry and drawing with Zamalek—Amakhosi revived their campaign with a vital away win over ZESCO United. A repeat result at home in Durban would dramatically reshape the group.

Al Masry currently lead the standings on seven points from three matches, with Zamalek second on five as the two Egyptian giants prepare to meet. Chiefs sit third on four points, while ZESCO remain rooted to the bottom without a point. Another win for Chiefs would not only eliminate ZESCO from the race for a top-two finish and a quarter-final spot, but also ensure Amakhosi end the round either second or at least level on points with the runners-up.

Confidence is being fuelled by Chiefs’ growing defensive solidity. Wednesday’s narrow 1–0 Betway Premiership win over Marumo Gallants marked a fifth consecutive clean sheet, underlining the team’s improved resilience. That victory was settled by a moment of brilliance from Makabi Glody Lilepo, whose spectacular effort—cross or shot—proved decisive.

There is further encouragement in the depth now available to the coaching staff. Lilepo was one of several changes to the starting line-up midweek, yet still delivered a match-winning display. Lebo Maboe has also continued to impress following his move from Mamelodi Sundowns, strengthening the midfield options.

Chiefs’ vast support base will again be in evidence on Sunday. While Moses Mabhida Stadium is not their traditional home, it has often served as a familiar stage for Amakhosi, and Durban-based supporters are expected to rally behind the team.

The Group D encounter takes place on Sunday, 1 February, at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with kick-off set for 15:00 CAT. The match will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
