South Africa put the final touches to their Africa Cup of Nations preparations when they face Ghana in a pre-tournament friendly at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto. The match serves as Bafana Bafana’s last warm-up before AFCON gets under way in Morocco on December 21.

Hugo Broos’ side will be missing several Europe-based players, who are set to link up with the squad directly in Morocco rather than feature in this fixture. Lyle Foster, Shandre Campbell and Sphephelo Sithole are all unavailable after FIFA moved the AFCON player release date from December 8 to December 15.

Bafana Bafana will wrap up their preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a friendly against Ghana this week.

South Africa come into the match in buoyant mood after sealing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in October, a run that has boosted belief within Hugo Broos’ squad and positioned them among Africa’s in-form sides.

The Black Stars, however, arrive with a squad largely made up of locally based players. While the encounter is primarily intended as a tune-up rather than a stern examination, Broos will still be keen to maintain Bafana’s unbeaten momentum heading into the tournament.

When and where is the match?

Bafana Bafana will host Ghana at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday, 16 December. Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00, with live coverage on SABC 1.

With AFCON in mind, Broos is expected to rotate his squad, fielding a line-up different from the one that will start against Angola in Morocco. Several players are likely to get valuable minutes, including Nkosinathi Sibisi, Samkele Kabini, Ricardo Goss and Thabang Matuludi.

Lyle Foster will miss the match as he is yet to report to camp, with the Burnley striker expected to link up with the squad later in the week. Meanwhile, surprise call-ups Tylon Smith and Shandre Campbell could make an impact from the bench during the tournament.
