Bafana’s New Star: Mohau Nkota Says Mudau Unlocked His AFCON Confidence

Nkota Ready for AFCON Stage as Mudau’s Backing Sparks Bafana Rise

Mohau Nkota is relishing his first AFCON appearance, saying his confidence has grown thanks to strong backing from teammates—especially right-back Khuliso Mudau. The 21-year-old Al Ettifaq winger, now an important part of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad, expects to play a major role as South Africa aim for their first continental title since 1996.

Nkota says Mudau immediately made him feel at home, encouraging him to focus on attacking: “Don’t come back, I’ll mark for you — just take them on.” That freedom, he says, energises him to play his natural game of running at defenders.

He views AFCON as a stepping stone toward fulfilling his childhood dream of playing at a World Cup — something he once promised his family while watching Argentina lift the trophy.

Nkota is adjusting well to life in Saudi Arabia despite the language barrier, describing himself as a positive, disciplined character who avoids drinking and smoking. He remains committed both to personal growth and to helping Bafana succeed at AFCON.
