Bobby Motaung Plays Down January Transfers as Kaizer Chiefs Back Squad Continuity

Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has moved to calm speculation around January reinforcements, insisting the club is content with its current squad and will not be rushed into signings despite mounting pressure from rivals.

With the January 2026 transfer window in full swing, Amakhosi have faced growing scrutiny as both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns make headline-grabbing moves. Pirates recently added Andre de Jong, while Sundowns landed former Buccaneers winger Monnapule Saleng in a deal that sent shockwaves across the Betway Premiership.

However, Motaung says Chiefs will not be drawn into reactive spending.

“We won’t close the door if a special player becomes available, but we are satisfied with the squad we have,” Motaung told Isolezwe, as quoted by iDiski Times. “We had players who were injured and they are now returning. We signed many players at the start of the season, and some of them haven’t even played yet.”

Trusting the rebuild

Kaizer Chiefs underwent a major rebuild at the beginning of the campaign, bringing in 11 new players. While some have already contributed, others are still adapting to the demands and expectations that come with wearing the gold and black.

“It’s not easy to join Chiefs,” Motaung added. “Some players take time to settle. They need to get used to the team so that everything can work properly. We don’t want to keep changing the squad.”

That patience, according to the club hierarchy, is central to the long-term project at Naturena. The belief is that continuity will unlock the full potential of the squad rather than constant reshuffling.

Results and what’s next

After 14 matches in all competitions, Chiefs have recorded four wins, eight draws and just two defeats—both away from home. While the number of draws highlights a lack of cutting edge, management feels the team is defensively stable and close to turning performances into consistent victories.

With injured players returning and others still yet to make their full impact, Motaung believes the “new signings” Chiefs need are already within the camp.

Attention now turns to their next Betway Premiership fixture against Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 20 January, where Amakhosi will look to prove that faith in continuity can outweigh the temptation of a busy transfer window.
