CAF Launches Probe After Heated Scenes in Two AFCON Quarter-Finals
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed it has opened disciplinary investigations into several incidents that occurred during the quarter-final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
In a statement released on Monday, CAF said it had reviewed official match reports and video footage that revealed “potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials” during two knockout fixtures — Morocco national football team vs Cameroon national football team, and Algeria national football team vs Nigeria national football team.
CAF confirmed that both matters have been formally referred to its Disciplinary Board, which will assess the evidence and determine whether sanctions should be imposed if any individuals are found guilty of misconduct.
The governing body reiterated its zero-tolerance stance, stating that it “strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers.”
Tensions After Algeria–Nigeria Match
Emotions ran particularly high following Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in Marrakech, where post-match scenes saw Algerian players and members of the technical staff confronting match officials on the pitch. Some were also seen following referees toward the tunnel in protest, with videos of the incidents spreading rapidly across social media.
Disorder extended into the stands, as some Algerian supporters attempted to enter restricted pitch areas, while flares were reportedly thrown amid the chaos. Footage circulating online also appeared to show fans holding what looked like Moroccan banknotes during the disturbances.
Morocco–Cameroon Also Under Review
CAF confirmed that incidents from the Morocco–Cameroon quarter-final are also part of the ongoing investigation, with concerns raised over conduct during and after the match. While details remain limited at this stage, the federation said all relevant reports and footage are being examined as part of the disciplinary process.
In addition, CAF revealed it is reviewing a separate incident involving members of the media in the mixed zone — the post-match interview area — where some journalists allegedly behaved inappropriately.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board will now study all available evidence and may issue penalties ranging from fines to suspensions. The continental body stressed it remains committed to upholding professionalism, respect, and order at all Africa Cup of Nations matches.
