South African football legend Doctor Khumalo has criticised the growing individualism among Bafana Bafana supporters, calling for unity ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
Speaking in Mbombela, Khumalo said he was disappointed to see fans on social media backing players based on club loyalty rather than national pride—especially after the team’s 0–0 draw with Zimbabwe. Some supporters even suggested that Bafana did not deserve to qualify because their favourite players were left out or due to disagreements with coach Hugo Broos.
Khumalo urged players to avoid social media distractions and remain focused, reminding them that “football is a game of opinions” and criticism is inevitable.
He emphasised the need for national unity, saying:
“When those boys are out there, we don’t have ten national anthems—it’s only one. We need to grow as a country and support like the Springboks fans do.”
Khumalo’s message comes as Bafana prepare for a must-win clash against Rwanda, with World Cup qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
