Kgaogelo Sekgota eyes fresh start at Siwelele FC
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC midfielder Kgaogelo Sekgota has resurfaced in the Betway Premiership, with reports indicating that he is currently training with Siwelele FC.
According to FARPost, the 28-year-old winger is undergoing a trial with the Mangaung-based outfit after recently turning out for Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Tubatse United. Sekgota made his debut for Tubatse shortly before the AFCON break, marking the occasion with a goal against Ditlou FC in Marble Hall.
Sekgota has been working to revive his career following a difficult period marked by off-field challenges that led to exits from several clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC and Magesi FC. After his contract with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City FC expired at the end of last season, the winger stepped away from competitive football for a period.
At the start of the current campaign, Sekgota entered a rehabilitation centre in Polokwane to address alcohol-related challenges. Following the successful completion of his recovery programme, he returned to the pitch with Tubatse United, using the platform to regain match sharpness and confidence.
Sources close to the player indicate that Sekgota began training with Siwelele FC on Monday, 6 January, as he looks to impress the technical team during his trial stint. Should things go well, a short-term deal could materialise before the January transfer window closes.
A Tubatse United source has also confirmed that Sekgota has since left for Mangaung and is unlikely to return to the Limpopo club this season.
Reflecting on his journey in a recent interview, Sekgota was candid about the lessons learned during his time away from the game.
“As a person, you do have challenges, and I have learnt from the ones I faced. My family never turned back on me. My partner never turned her back on me,” he said.
“I’m just working hard to do what’s best for me and my family.”
For Sekgota, the opportunity at Siwelele FC could represent another crucial lifeline — and a chance to reintroduce himself at top-flight level.
