Kaizer Chiefs Clear the Decks as Morris Heads for Stellenbosch

Kaizer Chiefs striker Tashreeq Morris is edging closer to a January switch to Stellenbosch FC, a move that would reunite him with veteran coach Gavin Hunt during the current transfer window.

Morris has endured a difficult spell at Naturena since arriving exactly a year ago. Signed under Nasreddine Nabi to add firepower to the Amakhosi frontline, the 31-year-old has struggled to make an impact, failing to deliver the consistency Chiefs had hoped for.

After making 10 appearances without a goal last season, the 2025/26 campaign has been even more frustrating. Morris, who joined Chiefs from SuperSport United, has found himself on the fringes of the squad, managing just one competitive outing this term — a late cameo in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 defeat to Stellenbosch.

His chances have been further reduced following the arrivals of Etiosa Ighodaro, Flavio Da Silva and Khanyisa Mayo, with Wandile Duba and Ashley Du Preez already ahead of him in the striking pecking order.

Stellenbosch talks gather pace

Negotiations to take Morris to the Winelands are believed to be at an advanced stage. Stellenbosch recently ushered in a new era after appointing Gavin Hunt to replace Steve Barker, who has since taken up a role with Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC.

Hunt previously worked with Morris at SuperSport United and is well acquainted with the striker’s strengths, particularly his physicality, movement and work ethic. The potential reunion is also seen as a solution to the gap left by Andre De Jong, who recently completed a high-profile move to Orlando Pirates.

Earlier this season, Hunt attempted to bring Morris to Durban City FC, later explaining that the deal fell through due to timing rather than doubts over the player’s ability. With talks with Chiefs dragging on, Hunt opted to secure Letsie Koapeng instead, citing budget constraints and the need for an immediate reinforcement.

Well-travelled and experienced, Morris has featured across the Betway Premiership for clubs such as Ajax Cape Town, Cape Town City FC, Sekhukhune United and SuperSport United — experience Stellenbosch believe could prove valuable in the second half of the season.
