Kaizer Chiefs Target CAF Recovery After Stuttering Start
Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung has reiterated the club’s determination to push forward in the CAF Confederation Cup, insisting that qualification remains firmly within reach despite an underwhelming start to the group stage.
Amakhosi opened their continental campaign with a defeat away to Al Masry, before settling for a draw at home against Egyptian giants Zamalek. Those results leave Chiefs third in Group D with one point from their first two matches, but with four fixtures still to be played.
Motaung believes there is ample opportunity for the Soweto giants to recover ground and collect the points needed to reach the knockout rounds once the competition resumes.
Reflecting on Chiefs’ return to continental football, she highlighted that winning the Nedbank Cup paved the way back into CAF interclub competition for the first time in several years, following the club’s memorable run to the CAF Champions League final in 2021.
She also pointed to the progress already made this season, with Chiefs navigating past opponents from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the preliminary rounds to secure their place in the group stages. That journey has already seen Amakhosi travel to Egypt and host one of Africa’s most decorated clubs at home.
Looking ahead, Motaung underlined that Chiefs remain fully focused on advancing when the campaign restarts after AFCON. The remaining schedule includes home and away encounters against Zesco United, followed by a return trip to Egypt to face Zamalek and a final home fixture against Al Masry.
Despite the slow start, Chiefs’ leadership remains confident that the team can still turn their group-stage campaign around and extend their stay in the CAF Confederation Cup in the new year.
