A Kaizer Chiefs player has suffered a significant setback ahead of the Premier Soccer League’s return, dealing a blow to the club’s preparations for the second half of the 2025/26 campaign. The Soweto giants are entering a crucial phase of the season with one of their most dependable performers sidelined by injury.
The timing could hardly be worse for Kaizer Chiefs, who remain firmly in the Betway Premiership title race. Amakhosi are currently four points behind their city rivals, Orlando Pirates, and were hoping to begin the league restart at full strength after a disrupted first half of the season.
The injury compounds an already transitional campaign at Naturena. Chiefs began the season brightly but underwent a coaching change early on, with the technical team reshuffled. Despite this, the squad has remained competitive, making the loss of a key figure particularly damaging as momentum builds toward the run-in.
Injury setback confirmed
The player at the centre of the setback is Sibongiseni “Ox” Mthethwa, who is expected to spend an extended period on the sidelines after suffering another injury blow. The experienced midfielder, known for his defensive discipline and leadership, has been one of the more consistent performers when available this season.
The former South African international joined Chiefs in September 2023 from Stellenbosch FC on a three-year contract. With his deal set to expire at the end of June, the latest injury arrives at a delicate moment, potentially complicating discussions around his future at the club.
So far in the current campaign, the 31-year-old has made 11 Betway Premiership appearances and has often been relied upon for balance and structure in midfield. His absence removes an important option for the technical team as Chiefs look to sustain their title push.
Surgery and recovery timeline
According to reports, the midfielder underwent knee surgery in December 2025, during the period when domestic football was paused due to the Africa Cup of Nations. This explains why his absence largely went unnoticed at the time. He is currently not participating in full team training as he continues to recover from the long-standing issue.
The projected timeline suggests he will begin a structured rehabilitation programme in February 2026, with a potential return to match fitness around March. However, with his contract nearing its end, Chiefs may be cautious, and any extension is likely to be short-term should he struggle to make a full comeback.
