Kaizer Chiefs captain and first-choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, with fewer than six months remaining on his current contract at the Soweto giants.
The 31-year-old has enjoyed a strong campaign, usurping Bruce Bvuma as the club’s number one and registering six clean sheets across competitions. His consistent performances have also placed him in the running for the Goalkeeper of the Season accolade.
Petersen is not alone in facing contractual uncertainty at Kaizer Chiefs. Six other players are set to see their deals expire at the end of June, and indications are that the club is not rushing into renewal talks at this stage.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Petersen’s agent, Glynn Binkin, confirmed that discussions are ongoing and revealed that the goalkeeper’s current agreement includes an extension option.
“In terms of Brandon, we are in discussions with them,” Binkin said.
“The contract runs until 30 June 2026, but there is an option for a further year. That said, we are still talking about a brand-new contract anyway.”
Uncertain futures at Naturena
Alongside Petersen, Bruce Bvuma, Dillan Solomons, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Pule Mmodi are all out of contract at the end of the season. While Petersen and Mthethwa are widely viewed as likely to be retained due to their form, others may need a strong second half of the campaign to secure their futures.
With the club expected to undergo changes following the termination of head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s contract in October, Chiefs could opt for a significant squad refresh next season if performances do not improve.
January window: who could make way?
As the PSL January transfer window gathers pace, Chiefs are also assessing possible departures to balance a bloated squad:
Tashreeq Morris – Signed in January 2025, the former SuperSport United striker has yet to score for Chiefs and has fallen completely out of contention. With his contract entering its final months, an exit looks inevitable.
Ashley du Preez – Despite offering pace and movement, du Preez has slipped down the pecking order amid increased competition. His return of 19 goals in 92 appearances may not be enough to save him.
Nkanyiso Shinga – The left-back has yet to make a single appearance since joining, and a loan move could be the best solution if he remains outside the coaching plans.
George Matlou – Competition in midfield has intensified, and after a short extension, his Chiefs stint could be nearing its end.
Fiacre Ntwari – The Rwandan goalkeeper has struggled to regain trust after losing his place, with off-field issues further denting his prospects.
With uncertainty surrounding several key players, the coming months promise to be pivotal as Chiefs decide who forms part of their long-term plans at Naturena.
