So why is there such a buzz around South Africa heading into the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a tournament opened by the hosts against unfancied Comoros?
The answer is simple: Hugo Broos.
Since taking charge just over four years ago, the Belgian veteran has overseen a remarkable turnaround in Bafana Bafana’s fortunes, guiding them to a third-place finish at the previous AFCON and restoring belief around the national team.
Now, as South Africa launch their latest campaign against Angola in Marrakech on Monday evening (7pm SA time), expectations are understandably higher. While outright favourites status may belong to hosts Morocco and reigning giants Senegal, Bafana enter the tournament as genuine dark horses — organised, confident and quietly ambitious, with every reason to believe they can challenge for the crown.
No injury concerns for either side ahead of kick-off — both squads report clean bills of health.
South Africa national football team coach Hugo Broos has urged caution, stressing that tournament openers are often unpredictable and decided by fine margins.
Broos warned against complacency, noting that Angola are well-organised and dangerous on transition.
The Angola national football team camp, however, is brimming with confidence.
Angola’s coach struck a bullish tone, insisting their AFCON mission goes beyond just South Africa.
“It’s not only about South Africa — our focus is on the whole group,” he said.
He also played down past meetings, stating that history and statistics “mean nothing” at AFCON.
Angola believe preparation and mentality will matter more than reputation on the night.
Both teams expect a tight, tactical contest as Group B action gets underway.
Kick-off approaching — stay tuned for line-ups and match action.
