Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Maseko has officially secured a move to Europe after being unveiled by Cypriot outfit AEL Limassol.
The 22-year-old joins the Limassol-based club on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns until the end of the season, following a challenging spell for game time under head coach Miguel Cardoso. The move was first reported last week and has now been formally confirmed by the Cypriot First Division side.
At AEL, Maseko will link up with fellow South African attacker Luther Singh, who has been with the club since July 2024. He will also be reunited in Cyprus with another Bafana Bafana forward, Mihlali Mayambela, who currently turns out for Aris Limassol.
In a statement announcing the signing, AEL said:
“The Limassol Athletic Association announces the signing of Thapelo Maseko on loan from the South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC until the end of the current football season.”
The club highlighted Maseko’s versatility and experience, noting that he can operate across attacking midfield roles. He began his professional career at SuperSport United, where he made 34 senior appearances before completing a move to Sundowns in 2023.
Since joining the Tshwane giants, Maseko has featured 45 times across domestic and continental competitions, including the CAF Champions League and the African Football League. He has also earned seven caps for the South African national team.
“We welcome the footballer to the big AEL family and wish him every success in the blue and yellow jersey,” the statement concluded.
