Pirates’ Firepower Impresses as January Reinforcements Loom

Pirates’ Carling Cup Triumph Underlines Depth as Transfer Plans Take Shape

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi believes Orlando Pirates’ growing attacking depth is what makes them such a dangerous force this season — and why they still have room to become even stronger.

Despite being an exhibition match, Pirates’ 2–0 Carling Cup win over the Carling All-Stars once again highlighted their spread of goals, with Sifiso Luthuli and Boitumelo Radiopane getting on the scoresheet. Crucially, neither is a regular starter, underlining the Buccaneers’ increasing firepower across the squad.

Mngqithi noted that Pirates no longer rely on one source for goals, pointing to the influence of Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis, who have refined the team’s attacking efficiency and punished opposition mistakes more consistently than in previous seasons.

With Pirates leading the PSL heading into the AFCON break, the balance of the squad has put them in a strong title position. However, the sale of Mbekezeli Mbokazi has freed up funds, opening the door for January reinforcements.

Orlando Pirates Show Depth, Eye Extra Quality in January

While the squad looks settled, strategic additions — particularly in defence and creative midfield — could give Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side the extra edge needed to sustain their title charge and finally end their long league drought.

Pirates are expected to explore January reinforcements, with TS Galaxy defender Khulumani Ndamane emerging as a leading candidate to fill the gap left by Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
Creative options are also being monitored, including Stellenbosch playmaker André de Jong, who could add competition and control in the final third.
Out wide, the Buccaneers have long admired Puso Dithejane, with his versatility and end product making him a potential market opportunity if movement occurs.
