Mamelodi Sundowns in Discussions Over Maseko’s Immediate Future
Mamelodi Sundowns could be set to part ways with winger Thapelo Maseko during the current transfer window, with discussions underway over a potential loan move.
The 22-year-old, now in his second season at Mamelodi Sundowns, has struggled for regular minutes under head coach Miguel Cardoso, making consistent involvement difficult despite his evident potential.
Earlier in the campaign, Maseko was linked with a move to Cyprus, but that switch failed to materialise. With his situation unchanged, his agent Glynn Binkin has now confirmed that talks are ongoing with Sundowns regarding a temporary exit aimed at reigniting the player’s career.
“For Thapelo, there are several loan options available for January, and those possibilities are currently being discussed with Sundowns,” Binkin told Soccer Laduma.
“He is a talented young player who needs consistent game time. If that opportunity isn’t going to come at Sundowns — which we understand and respect — then it’s important that he’s allowed to play elsewhere. That would be in everyone’s best interests, especially the player’s, as his development has unfortunately stalled over the past two seasons.”
Maseko’s record at Sundowns
This season, Maseko has managed just five Betway Premiership appearances, with seven outings across all competitions. Since joining the Brazilians two years ago, he has featured 45 times in total, registering three goals and one assist.
A loan move could now provide the platform Maseko needs to regain momentum and showcase the qualities that once marked him out as one of South Africa’s most exciting young wide players.
