Pirates’ new signings sharpen cutting edge, says Mngqithi
Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi believes Orlando Pirates’ rise to the top of the Betway Premiership this season has been driven by one defining trait: efficiency.
After several seasons of promise without consistency, the Buccaneers have clicked into a ruthless rhythm in 2025/26. They have already collected three trophies — the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup and Carling Black Label Cup — and currently lead the league, underlining a growing authority under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Mngqithi saw Pirates up close while coaching the Carling All-Stars, who were beaten 2–0 by the Soweto giants. He described Pirates as a “fascinating” team, noting that while they may not always dominate chances, they punish opponents’ mistakes far more consistently than in previous seasons.
According to Mngqithi, that sharpness has been boosted by key new signings. He singled out Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis for adding refinement and balance to the attack, while praising the team’s improved work rate and pressing from the front.
Despite an early CAF Champions League exit, Ouaddou insists Pirates have responded positively, refocusing their energy on domestic success. He expects the second half of the season to be tougher but remains confident in his side’s consistency.
Pirates resume league action away to Sekhukhune United on 24 January 2026, with momentum firmly on their side.
