Sundowns Told to Expect ‘War’ in Algeria – SA Side Unmoved
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso says his team will chase nothing less than full control of CAF Champions League Group C when they face Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger in a fiery showdown on Friday night (21:00).
Sundowns arrive in Algeria sitting top of the group after their opening victory over FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo, while Mokwena’s MCA occupy third following defeat to Al-Hilal Omdurman. With the AFCON break fast approaching, Cardoso believes this fixture is a crucial opportunity to create separation in the standings.
“As we approach the international break for AFCON, it’s important for us to position ourselves as strongly as possible in the Champions League,” Cardoso said. “We want to make a good match and try to get the best result so we go into the break in the best position.”
‘Hostile? We love these ambiences’ – Cardoso unfazed
The Portuguese mentor expects a hostile reception at the Ali la Pointe Stadium, but insists his players thrive under pressure and hostile northern African atmospheres.
“What I expect is an intense match, in an environment where the best players excel,” he said. “Players without experience usually shrink, but we see these atmospheres as motivating. I worked in Tunisia, I know this feeling well. We have played many Champions League games in North Africa — the ambience is always intense and beautiful.”
Cardoso said a packed stadium will only fuel his side’s performance.
“It’s wonderful to have a full and supportive stadium. These are the moments players dream of. The crowd will force a fast tempo and high commitment — we must be ready for it. But for us, this match is an opportunity.”
Despite the high stakes, he stresses the journey is far from over.
“Whatever happens, we go home and keep working. This competition’s story is far from written — this is only one chapter.”
