A Huge Transition’: Berhalter on Pairing Mbokazi and Dithejane at Chicago Fire
Chicago Fire head coach and Director of Football Gregg Berhalter has explained the thinking behind the club’s decision to sign both Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Puso Dithejane.
“We want to bring talented players who can genuinely help the squad into this club,” Berhalter said, speaking to Fire media. “We also believe it’s beneficial for them to arrive together and work as a pair. This is a big transition for both players, and it helps knowing they’ll have someone from home alongside them to ease the adaptation process.”
On Tuesday, Chicago Fire FC officially announced the acquisition of winger Puso Dithejane from Betway Premiership outfit TS Galaxy. The 21-year-old has signed a deal running through the 2029–30 season, with an option for the 2030–31 campaign, and will occupy both a U22 Initiative slot and an international roster place.
“In bringing Puso to Chicago, we’re adding one of South Africa’s most exciting young attacking talents,” Berhalter said. “His dynamism will provide depth to our squad this season, while also laying a strong foundation for his continued development and long-term contribution to the team.”
Dithejane leaves TS Galaxy having made 63 senior appearances, registering seven goals and 13 assists. He began his professional career at Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa’s most storied clubs.
He becomes Chicago Fire’s second South African signing of the offseason, following the arrival of centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi from Orlando Pirates, who also joined under the U22 Initiative programme.
