Why Kaizer Chiefs could target a Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder in January

Why Sphelele Mkhulise Makes Sense for Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs may find an unexpected solution to one of their creative challenges by looking across to rivals Mamelodi Sundowns when the January transfer window opens.

Sphelele Mkhulise appears to be at a turning point in his career, having featured sparingly for Sundowns this season. The attacking midfielder has made just a handful of appearances despite opportunities opening up in the squad, suggesting his chances at Chloorkop have become limited.

Even with the exit of Lucas Ribeiro and injury setbacks to Themba Zwane, Sundowns opted to strengthen elsewhere, bringing in Nuno Santos and Katlego Ntsabeleng rather than turning to Mkhulise. The decision has left the Pietermaritzburg-born playmaker further down the depth chart and in need of a fresh platform.

For Chiefs, the idea is not to replace Mduduzi Shabalala but to support him. The 21-year-old has already shown his quality for both Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana, yet the responsibility of being the side’s main creative outlet at such a young age can be demanding.

Adding an experienced option like Mkhulise — who has played more than 180 senior matches — could ease that burden. His presence would offer leadership, competition and guidance, allowing Shabalala more freedom to express himself and continue developing without constant pressure.

With a January move increasingly realistic, Chiefs could benefit from giving Mkhulise a chance to restart his career, while simultaneously strengthening their own squad in a smart and balanced way.
